Mobile technology to reach unbanked population

We had an interesting discussion yesterday in the MBA class about the use of mobile technology in Kenya as a mobile money service. The well-known case of M-Pesa (Safaricom) is a great story of how digital platforms can allow companies to reach unbanked or underbanked population, which increase citizens’ quality of life and create more opportunities for the community. The story is an extraordinary example of use of technology for building a more sustainable and responsible world. Recently World Bank said that M-pesa is also increasing savings for subscribers. However, M-pesa does not seem to be a proper saving platform and local banks have the opportunity to build on this experience.  Of course, banks with a commitment to serve low income market.
